The Kitchen

Fully equipped kitchen located at the back of the building overlooking the backyard and pond, with fantastic views of the Bras d’Or Lake. Lots of windows, counter space, a beautiful Cape Breton marble island for prepping, and two tables. A great space for entertaining! The kitchen even has a large TV mounted on the wall.

Your Breakfast paradise

Enjoy your breakfast here, or a few steps away in the large dining room, or on the back step if you like hot morning sun!

The Lobby

Did you know the Grand Narrows Vacation Home use to be a famous heritage hotel? As you enter our historic building you are welcomed by a grand staircase that winds up to the third story. As much fun as it looks, you probably shouldn’t slide down the bannister! Make no wonder why the first step has a well-defined ware mark – guests have been checking in here since 1887!

Dining Room

Have you ever had tea in the same room as the King of England? During a visit to Canada, King George the 5th (who was Prince at the time), had been taking the train through Cape Breton. During a stopover at the Grand Narrows Station he walked over to the former Grand Narrows Hotel and had tea in the dining room. He told staff of hotel that we had very fine china! Beside this famous dining room guest, and many others, this dining room is also great for entertaining and catering. There’s a door to the kitchen and one to the hallway.

Front & Back Parlours

The front and back parlours can be opened up as one large room or divided into two with a sliding pocket door. Enjoy our upright piano in wonderful working condition. These rooms are large enough for a small wedding, hosting gatherings (receptions, retirement parties, etc.), or family games.

The "Office"

This room is great for kicking back watching TV, working on a laptop, or reading a book. Our nautical themed office is devoted to the old Ferry that ran between the communities of Iona and Grand Narrows. The “C. Monty MacMillan’s” steering wheel is found mounted on the wall. The original front desk (feather pen ink stains and all!) that used to check in original guests is still in excellent condition - and is often used as a bar more than anything!

The Bell Room

Dedicated to the former Hotel’s most frequent guest – Alexander Graham Bell. This room was where Bell most often stayed – sometimes alone or with his wife Mabel and their maid. Bell’s famous student Hellen Keller was also a well-known travel companion. Keller was noted for swimming in front of the Hotel with her trusted Golden Retriever. This room has it’s own private bath.

The MACLENNaN ROOM

Dedicated to the second owners of the building – my mother and father, Hazel and Clarence MacLennan. They purchased this building in 1956 and it became our favourite summer home on the island. This room has it’s own private bath.

Matching Clawfoot Tub Bathrooms

These bathrooms were once used as the guest’s traveling maid’s room. They are now equipped with the original Hotel marble sinks, but we’ve added beautiful clawfoot tubs and modern toilets.

Freshen Up with a view!

These bathrooms are large, bright and breezy - each equipped with freshening-up stations that will have you sipping coffee for hours!

The MACDougall ROOM

Dedicated to the original owner of the building – H. F. MacDougall. MacDougall was a member of the Canadian Parliament, serving under Prime Minister Sir John A. MacDonald. MacDougall grew up a few minutes down the road in a community called Christmas Island, and quickly built the Hotel after he had lobbied to have the Inter-Colonial Railway run through the Barra Strait. This room has it’s own private bath.

The MacNeil ROOM

Dedicate to the original Hotel Manager – Josephine MacNeil. This room was occupied by MacNeil during her career here. She had pipes installed in her room that led directly to the kitchen – this must have been before A. G. Bell invented his telephone! This room has it’s own private bath (the only three-piece bathroom).

Maid’s Quarters

The very first thing you may notice entering this section of the home is the tiny 4 foot door leading off the main staircase. These quarters are where the maids would have stayed, once upon a time. Now, they house two bedrooms, laundry, linens, and the main bathroom. They also have access to the main building and staircase down into the kitchen.

The Grand Narrows in Summer

The Grand Narrows Vacation Home is located on a wonderful piece of property with a large lawn and incredible views from literally every vantage point. We also have our own private beach, fitted with warm golden sand and comfy adirondack chairs. The water is perfectly delightful in the summer and a wonderful place to take a swim!

Our Personal beach

Our personal private beach is really something! Nestled on the beautiful Bras d'Or lake, overlooking the village of Iona - guests of our vacation home will spend hours reading, swimming, and relaxing just steps away from the front porch of our home.
